Vice President, Engineering & System Operations

Job Description:

The Vice President, Engineering & System Operations primary responsibility is to oversee the planning, construction, maintenance and operation of the transmission, substation, property acquisition, system control and communication systems at the Cooperative. 

The position reports directly to the Executive Vice President & General Manager and works with a team of four other Vice Presidents. 

This position will:

Coordinate and approve operation, maintenance, and construction activities to ensure optimum utilization of power system facilities and meet member system demands for electrical energy.

Supervise, direct, and coordinate all jobs associated with the operation, maintenance and construction of the transmission, distribution, system control and communication systems of the Cooperative.

Coordinate the development and/or review of emergency restoration plans, planning studies, relay studies, Construction Work Plans and other reports, records and engineering information for completeness and accuracy.

Overall responsibility and authority for leading and managing Corn Belt Power Cooperative’s implementation of, and adherence to, the NERC Reliability Standards.  Ensure representation in regional reliability organizations, conferences, trainings, and seminars.

Accountable for transmission operations within the functional control of the Southwest Power Pool (SPP) and responsible for complying with SPP tariff requirements. Represent the cooperative on the SPP Market Operations & Policy Committee. Promote and support staff participation in SPP working groups and task forces.

Oversee existing and coordinate new interconnection agreements with neighboring utilities and jointly owned transmission owners.

Participate in research and joint planning projects.

Prepare capital and operating budgets for the engineering department and review department budgets under this position.

Oversee/coordinate the purchase of equipment for the construction, maintenance, and improvements to the communications, substation, and transmission systems.

Occasional travel in and out of state will be required.  Attendance at meetings outside of normal business hours is expected.

Education and Experience

Requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field plus 5 years working experience in the power transmission/distribution industry.  As an alternative to a bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field, 10 years of progressive work experience in the power transmission/distribution industry, of which at least five years have been in a supervisory role is required.  Must be knowledgeable about current industry technology, procedures and equipment.  Excellent interpersonal skills, which include verbal and written communications and oral presentations, are essential.
